Upon assessment, we noted that the home's orientation did not take full advantage of its sun exposure or the stunning sea views. The upper level—the original bungalow—included the living room, kitchen, three bedrooms, a bathroom, and an ensuite. The lower ground floor, added later, comprised additional bedrooms, a bathroom, and an internal double garage.
Reimagining Space and Light - We relocated the bedrooms to the east side of the upper level, allowing them to bask in the morning sun—a natural and invigorating start to the day. The living room, dining area, and kitchen were moved to the northwest side, where they now enjoy abundant afternoon sunlight and panoramic ocean views. By opening up these spaces, we created a warm and inviting environment ideal for family gatherings and daily living.
Enhancing the Entrance - Recognising the confusion caused by the hidden front door, we redesigned the entrance, relocating it to the main corner of the house facing the driveway. This new entrance provides a clear and welcoming approach, enhancing the home's street presence and making it more inviting for guests.
Elevating the Roof and Ceilings - The original bungalow featured lovely high ceilings, but previous additions resulted in inconsistent ceiling heights and a mix of roof styles. We upgraded the ageing metal roof, maintaining the home's classic weatherboard aesthetic while introducing a modern touch. By lifting and standardising the roof structure with trusses, we achieved uniform three-metre-high ceilings throughout the upper level, enhancing the sense of space and light.
Connecting Indoor and Outdoor Living - We extended the deck on the northwest side to capture all-day sun and provide seamless access to the back garden via new stairs. This extension not only expands the outdoor living area but also offers clear sightline to the garden—a perfect set-up for families with young children. The use of a timber balustrade maintains the home's traditional character while ensuring safety and openness.
