The result is a two-storey home oriented towards the north-east, capturing stunning beach views and ample sunlight.
A gravel footpath leads to the front door through a landscaped garden, creating a welcoming and elegant entrance that respects the coastal community's aesthetic.
Upon entering the house, visitors are presented with two options: descending a few steps to the private guest suite or ascending to the main living areas. Reaching the top landing, a full-height window frames the magnificent ocean vista, immediately connecting occupants with the natural surroundings.
To the right, the expansive master suite awaits. It features a walk-in wardrobe, an ensuite bathroom, and an office nook bathed in morning sun with uninterrupted views of the beach and adjacent park. Placing the master bedroom on this side ensures the owners wake up to breathtaking scenery, a daily reminder of their idyllic new home.
On the west side, the living room, kitchen, and dining area are designed to bask in the afternoon sun. This space extends to an alfresco dining area on the deck, perfect for entertaining or relaxing. The west section of the home protrudes slightly, while the east side is set back with full-height glazing. This architectural choice creates a wrap-around deck that offers all-day sun and seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
Understanding the need for versatility, the dining area accommodates both intimate and large gatherings. Built-in bench seating under the west-facing windows provides a cozy nook for casual meals, while space for a large dining table caters to family events or dinner parties. The flexible layout ensures the home feels comfortable for two but can effortlessly expand for guests.
The private guest suite is thoughtfully designed for comfort and independence. Located just a few steps down from the main entrance, it includes a bedroom, a small sitting area, a kitchenette, and an ensuite bathroom. Doors open to an eastern patio and garden, offering guests their own outdoor space with glimpses of the beach. This arrangement balances togetherness and privacy, enhancing the home's functionality.
Outdoor living is a key feature, with the north-facing deck serving as a natural extension of the indoor spaces. We incorporated steps on either side of the deck, connecting it seamlessly to the grassy landscape that leads toward the beach. To provide shelter without sacrificing openness, we installed a clear, UV-protected roofing material supported by timber battens over the deck. This allows for year-round enjoyment of the outdoor area, protected from the elements yet flooded with natural light.
Material selection was guided by simplicity and harmony with the environment. We used vertical timber weatherboards, timber structures for deck coverings, and external shutters that add character and enhance thermal performance. The timber elements are oiled and will age gracefully to a silver-grey patina, reminiscent of driftwood, further blending the home with its seaside setting.
The south-facing street frontage is softened with thoughtful landscaping and greenery. By situating the garage on the side, we avoided the visual impact of a large garage door and concrete driveway dominating the facade.
The interior finishes and colours for the kitchen and bathrooms were carefully selected to compliment the natural setting of the house, site and surroundings. By selecting colours and finishes that mimic and compliment the surroundings the house acts as an extension of the site, beach, driftwood and natural elements.
